Blueberry walnut overnight oats
September 19, 2026 · 3 min read

Breakfast that makes itself while you sleep, and lands three of the foods the MIND diet leans on hardest — a whole grain, berries, and nuts — in a single jar. Rolled oats soften overnight in milk and yogurt, chia seeds thicken the whole thing to a pudding-like spoon, and blueberries and walnuts go on in the morning. No cooking, no morning decisions, and it travels in the jar you made it in.
Make two jars at once and the back half of the week takes care of itself.
Ingredients
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup milk (dairy or unsweetened plant milk)
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of cinnamon
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1/3 cup walnuts, chopped
Steps
- Stir the oats, milk, yogurt, chia, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon together in a jar or bowl until combined.
- Fold in half the blueberries, cover, and refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight.
- In the morning, stir, loosen with a splash of milk if it's thick, and top with the remaining blueberries and the walnuts.
How it comes together

PrepUse a jar with a lid you can shake — for a smoother mix, shake the base instead of stirring so the chia doesn't clump.

Notes and swaps
Any milk works — dairy, soy, almond, or oat — and each changes the richness a little. Greek yogurt makes a thicker, higher-protein base; skip it for a lighter, dairy-free jar and add an extra splash of milk. Maple syrup is easy to leave out if the blueberries are sweet enough, or swap in a little honey. Frozen blueberries work as well as fresh and soften into the oats overnight; stir them into the base and they'll tint the whole jar purple. Pecans or sliced almonds stand in for the walnuts, and a spoonful of ground flax folds in for extra body.
Tell MIND Diet Companion "blueberry walnut overnight oats" and it logs the whole grain, berry, and nut groups in one line, so the morning already counts toward the week's pattern.
FAQ
Can I use steel-cut oats? No. Steel-cut oats stay too firm to soften properly in a cold soak. Rolled (old-fashioned) oats are what turn creamy overnight; quick oats work too but go softer.
What milk should I use? Any milk you like — dairy, soy, almond, or oat all work. Thinner plant milks make a looser jar, so use a little less if you want it thick.
Can I use frozen blueberries? Yes. Fold them into the base and they'll thaw and soften overnight, coloring the oats purple. Save a few fresh ones for the top if you want the contrast.
How long do overnight oats keep? Up to four days in a covered jar in the fridge, which is what makes them good for batch-prep. Add the walnuts fresh each morning so they stay crunchy rather than softening in.
Is this a MIND-friendly breakfast? It brings together three groups the MIND eating pattern is built around — a whole grain, berries, and nuts — in one bowl, which makes it an easy morning template to keep in rotation alongside a spinach and strawberry salad for lunch.
