Nordic air fryer cinnamon apples

In the Nordic kitchen, dessert often means doing very little to good fruit — and warm cinnamon apples are a perfect example. The air fryer softens and caramelizes apple wedges in about ten minutes, and spooned over cool skyr with a sprinkle of oats, they make a dessert (or a weekend breakfast) that leans on everyday orchard fruit and whole grains rather than sugar.
The apples bring their own sweetness as they cook, so very little honey is needed — if any.
Ingredients
- 4 apples, cored and sliced into wedges
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional)
- Squeeze of lemon
- To serve: skyr or plain yogurt, a sprinkle of rolled oats, chopped nuts
Steps
- Toss the apple wedges with the melted butter, cinnamon, honey, and a squeeze of lemon.
- Arrange in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes, shaking once, until soft and lightly caramelized at the edges.
- Toast a small handful of rolled oats in the air fryer for the last 2 minutes for a little crunch, if you like.
- Serve the warm apples over skyr or yogurt, topped with the oats and a few chopped nuts.
Notes and swaps
Firmer apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp hold their shape; softer ones turn more into a compote, which is also good. Skip the honey and let the fruit carry the sweetness for a lighter version. Pears work beautifully the same way. The skyr adds protein and the Nordic tang; the oats and nuts add crunch and fiber, echoing the skyr breakfast bowl. A pinch of cardamom is a lovely Nordic addition.
