Keto and alcohol: what to drink (and skip)

June 27, 2026 · 3 min read

You can drink on keto; you just have to choose well, because the carb range across drinks is enormous. A light beer and a glass of dry wine look similar in the glass and are worlds apart on your daily count.

Two things matter: the carbs in the drink, and what alcohol itself does once it's in you.

What to drink

Lowest carb Watch Skip
Dry red or white wine (~3–4 g) Dry cider, hard seltzer (check the label) Regular beer (~12 g)
Champagne / brut sparkling (~1–2 g) Cocktails with a splash of juice Sweet wine, dessert wine
Spirits, neat or on the rocks (0 g) Light beer (~3–6 g) Sugary cocktails, frozen drinks

Spirits — vodka, gin, whiskey, tequila, rum — have no carbs on their own. The carbs come from the mixer, so use soda water, diet tonic, or a squeeze of citrus instead of juice, regular tonic, or soda. A few raw drink carbs are easy to miss, which is the kind of thing hidden carbs covers.

What alcohol does on keto

Beyond the carbs, alcohol changes how your body burns fuel:

  • It pauses fat-burning. Your body treats alcohol as a priority fuel and clears it first, so fat oxidation waits in line until it's gone. A night of drinking doesn't knock you out of ketosis, but it can slow fat loss and is a common reason the scale stalls.
  • Your tolerance often drops. Many people on keto report getting tipsy faster on less; plan accordingly and don't drive.
  • The next-day appetite. Lowered restraint plus a hangover is when carby food wins, which can undo a good week.

None of this is medical advice. If you take medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor about alcohol, and drink responsibly regardless of diet.

Keeping it in your day

The trick is to count the drink before the second one, not after the fourth. Tell Copper Keto Companion "two glasses of dry red wine" and it works out the carbs and where the night leaves you against your limit, so the decision to stop is yours and informed. FAQ

Does alcohol kick you out of ketosis? Usually not by itself, especially low-carb drinks. But your body burns the alcohol before returning to fat, so fat loss pauses until it's cleared.

What's the best keto alcohol? Straight spirits (zero carbs) with a zero-carb mixer, or dry wine and brut Champagne (a few carbs). Avoid beer, sweet wine, and sugary cocktails.

Why do I get drunk faster on keto? It's commonly reported, likely tied to lower glycogen and eating less alongside drinks. Treat your tolerance as lower than usual and don't drive.

Will one night of drinking ruin my progress? A single night of low-carb drinks is rarely the problem. The bigger risk is the lowered restraint and next-day carb cravings, so plan the food around it.
