Is hummus keto?

July 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Hummus sits in the same category as carrots — a food that comes up frequently because people assume legumes are automatically out on keto, but the actual numbers tell a more specific story. Four tablespoons (a standard serving) has about 7–9 g of net carbs. That's manageable. Eight tablespoons isn't.

The other variable is what you eat it with. Pita bread is 20+ g net carbs per piece. Celery and cucumber are essentially free.

The numbers

Serving Approx. net carbs
2 tablespoons (standard label serving) ~3–5 g
4 tablespoons (~60 g) ~7–9 g
1/4 cup ~7–9 g
1/2 cup ~14–17 g

Commercial hummus varies by brand and flavor. Plain (classic) hummus is the baseline. Roasted red pepper hummus is similar. Flavors with added sweeteners, dried fruit, or honey run higher.

When hummus fits on keto

A 4-tablespoon serving with celery, cucumber, or bell pepper strips fits most keto ceilings if the rest of the day is low-carb. The combination comes to about 9–12 g net carbs for the snack — manageable within a 20–50 g daily ceiling.

What doesn't fit: using hummus as a spread on any grain-based vehicle (pita, bread, crackers), eating more than half a cup at once, or having it as part of a meal that already has other moderate-carb vegetables.

Lower-carb dip alternatives

If you want something in the same category — a savory dip for vegetables — these are more reliably keto:

  • Guacamole: about 2 g net carbs per 4 tablespoons; mostly fat
  • Full-fat cream cheese: about 1–2 g net carbs per 2 tablespoons; pair with herbs
  • Baba ganoush: slightly lower carbs than hummus (~4–6 g per 4 tbsp)
  • Sour cream or crème fraîche: about 1 g net carbs per 2 tablespoons

The keto snacks guide covers the full picture on snacks that don't require careful portion tracking.

What to dip in hummus on keto

  • Celery stalks (~0.5 g net carbs per stalk)
  • Cucumber slices (~2 g net carbs per cup)
  • Bell pepper strips (~3 g net carbs per half-cup)
  • Radishes (~2 g per 10 radishes)
  • Pork rinds (0 g)

Copper Keto Companion runs the full meal rather than one component — say "hummus with cucumber and celery" and it totals the snack, not just the dip. That's the realistic way to know if it fits in a given day.

FAQ

Are chickpeas keto? Chickpeas (the main ingredient in hummus) have about 25 g net carbs per half-cup cooked — not keto-compatible as a standalone food. Hummus has a lower carb density per tablespoon because it's blended with olive oil, tahini, and water.

Is store-bought or homemade hummus lower-carb? The carb content in homemade hummus is about the same as commercial if you use similar proportions. Adding extra tahini or olive oil increases fat without adding carbs.

What about "keto hummus" made with cauliflower? Cauliflower hummus (blended roasted cauliflower with tahini and lemon) has about 3–4 g net carbs per 4-tablespoon serving — meaningfully lower than chickpea hummus. The texture is close; the flavor is slightly different.

Can I eat hummus on a 50 g daily carb ceiling? At 50 g, a quarter-cup of hummus with vegetables fits comfortably as a snack. The more relaxed ceiling makes hummus a straightforward yes.
