Are bananas keto?

July 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Bananas come up constantly as a keto question, and the answer is about as clear as it gets: they don't fit a strict keto ceiling. A medium banana has roughly 24 g of net carbs — almost exactly the same as a bowl of oatmeal, and that's before you've eaten anything else.

The sweetness is a signal. Ripe bananas are high in simple sugars, and the fiber content doesn't offset the total carbs meaningfully.

The numbers

Type Serving Approx. net carbs
Medium banana 1 whole (~118 g) ~24 g
Small banana 1 whole (~81 g) ~17 g
Large banana 1 whole (~136 g) ~27 g
Frozen banana slices 1/2 cup ~12 g

These are approximate label averages. A banana's net carbs also go up as it ripens — an underripe banana has more resistant starch (which behaves more like fiber metabolically), but not enough to bring it into keto range.

Lower-carb fruits

Fruit is one of the trickier keto categories because sugar content varies a lot by type. These are the better options:

Fruit Serving Approx. net carbs
Blackberries 1/2 cup ~3 g
Raspberries 1/2 cup ~3.5 g
Strawberries 1/2 cup ~4.5 g
Blueberries 1/2 cup ~9 g
Watermelon 1 cup cubed ~11 g
Cantaloupe 1/2 cup ~6.5 g
Avocado 1/2 whole ~2 g

Berries are the keto default for a reason: they're low enough in net carbs that a portion fits into most daily ceilings. Avocado is technically a fruit and is one of the most keto-friendly options at all — mostly fat, very few net carbs.

The potassium question

One reason people reach for bananas on keto is that they're a convenient potassium source, and potassium is one of the electrolytes that drops on keto. The fix isn't to add bananas — it's to get potassium from keto-compatible sources: avocado (500–700 mg per half), salmon (~400 mg per serving), leafy greens, and electrolyte supplements. The electrolytes on keto guide covers this.

Tracking fruit on keto

If you're eating berries or small amounts of other fruit, Copper Keto Companion handles it the same way as anything else: say what you had — "half a cup of strawberries with cream" — and it works out the net carbs against your running day. No looking up tables mid-meal.

FAQ

Are green bananas keto? No. Even underripe (green) bananas have 17–20 g net carbs per medium banana. The resistant starch content is higher than a ripe banana, but they still don't fit a standard keto ceiling.

What about banana extract or banana flavoring? Pure banana extract has essentially no carbs and works fine in baked goods.

Can I eat a tiny bit of banana? A small slice or two (say, 20 g) adds about 4–5 g net carbs — that's manageable if you're tracking carefully. A half or whole banana is too much for strict keto regardless of how it's framed.

Is dried banana or banana chips keto? No. Drying concentrates the sugar. Banana chips have 25–30 g net carbs per ounce.
