Keto on a budget: the cheapest way to eat low-carb

June 11, 2026 · 4 min read

Keto gets a reputation for being expensive because the aspirational version is full of grass-fed beef, wild salmon, and specialty products. The practical version — the one that produces results — is built from some of the cheapest whole foods available.

The most expensive keto mistake is buying packaged "keto" products. Keto bars, keto protein powders, keto snacks, and keto cereals are expensive and frequently full of maltitol, which raises blood glucose and shouldn't be subtracted from net carbs. Avoid them entirely and you've eliminated most of the budget problem.

The cheapest keto foods

Eggs are the single best budget keto food. High protein, high fat, nearly zero carbs, versatile, and among the cheapest calories per gram of protein available. A dozen eggs typically costs less than $3 and covers multiple meals.

Ground beef (80/20) is more affordable than lean beef and better for keto — the fat makes it filling and flavorful. Bulk packs reduce cost further. Use it in bowls, patties, or one-pan dishes with vegetables.

Chicken thighs (bone-in, skin-on) cost significantly less than chicken breasts and are higher in fat, which makes them more satiating and harder to overcook. Thighs are a better keto choice than breasts in most contexts.

Canned fish — tuna, sardines, mackerel, salmon — is among the most affordable sources of protein and omega-3 fatty acids available. Sardines in olive oil are particularly nutrient-dense and inexpensive. Canned tuna works in salads, lettuce wraps, and egg-based dishes.

Frozen vegetables (broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, green beans) cost less than fresh, last indefinitely, and retain most of their nutritional value. The keto food list covers which vegetables are low-carb.

Cabbage is one of the cheapest vegetables available and works as a rice substitute, in stir-fries, or braised with meat. A head of green cabbage typically costs under $2 and lasts a week.

Butter and lard are cheaper than olive oil per calorie and work well for cooking. Both are appropriate keto fats.

Cheese (block, not pre-shredded) — block cheese costs less per ounce than shredded, and pre-shredded often contains potato starch to prevent clumping, which adds carbs.

Budget weekly meal structure

A week of keto on a tight budget might look like:

  • Breakfast: scrambled eggs with butter (3–4 eggs, 1–2 tbsp butter)
  • Lunch: tuna or sardine salad with mayonnaise on lettuce, or leftovers
  • Dinner: ground beef with sautéed cabbage or frozen broccoli; chicken thighs with frozen spinach

That structure uses five ingredients and produces meals under $4–5 per person per day depending on local prices — less expensive than most fast food.

What to skip

Pre-packaged "keto" products — bars, shakes, cereals, chips. They're expensive, often contain maltitol (see the net carbs explainer), and provide no advantage over whole food.

Specialty cuts of meat — grass-fed, pasture-raised, organic. These are quality upgrades, not keto requirements. Results come from macros, not sourcing.

Pre-made cauliflower rice and other convenience vegetables — fresh cauliflower is much cheaper; frozen is cheaper still.

Logging it affordably

Logging doesn't require an expensive app subscription. Copper Keto Companion's 7-day free trial covers enough time to see whether the tracking approach works for you before committing. The voice logging method means less time spent on tracking even when you're cooking simple meals.

Frequently asked

Is keto more expensive than a regular diet? For most people, a whole-food keto diet is comparable in cost to a standard diet once you stop buying specialty products. Replacing bread, pasta, and processed snacks with eggs, frozen vegetables, and ground beef is often cost-neutral or cheaper.

What are the best cheap keto snacks? Hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, a handful of almonds or walnuts, and pork rinds. All cheap, all genuinely low-carb without added sugar. Avoid the packaged keto snack bars.

How do I avoid spending extra on keto-labeled products? Read the hidden carbs guide — it covers why most "keto" labeled products aren't worth buying. A food label is more reliable than a product claim.
