Keto fast food: how to order at any chain

June 11, 2026 · 4 min read

Fast food gets a bad reputation on keto, mostly from people who haven't thought through the ordering pattern. The carbs at any fast food chain come from the same three places: the bread or tortilla wrapping the protein, the starchy sides (fries, rice, beans), and the sweet sauces. Remove those three and most menus have a workable keto option.

The eating out guide covers the general pattern; this guide applies it chain by chain.

The universal pattern

At any chain: protein + non-starchy side or salad + fat (cheese, avocado, oil) — no bun, no rice, no fries, sauce on the side or skipped.

That order is available almost everywhere once you know to ask for it.

McDonald's

Works: bunless burger or grilled chicken (ask to hold the bun and ketchup), side salad with oil and vinegar, black coffee.

Skip: the bun (adds ~25g net carbs), ketchup and sweet sauces, fries, McFlurries and shakes.

Best order: double patty bunless with cheese, lettuce, mustard; side salad with oil and vinegar packets.

Chick-fil-A

Works: grilled chicken sandwich without the bun, grilled nuggets, side salad, market salad without the granola.

Skip: breaded (Classic) chicken — the breading adds significant carbs. The original chicken biscuit and regular sandwich have ~40g net carbs. Polynesian sauce is high in sugar.

Best order: grilled chicken sandwich, no bun; or grilled nuggets with a side salad. Avocado lime ranch dressing is lower carb than most options.

Burger King

Works: any burger bunless, grilled chicken bunless, side salad.

Skip: buns, fries, onion rings, sweet sauces (BBQ, honey mustard).

Best order: Whopper bunless — double patty, cheese, mustard or mayo, lettuce and tomato.

Wendy's

Works: bunless burgers, grilled chicken salad, chili (low carb relative to portion size — around 15g net carbs for a large), side salad.

Skip: buns, fries, Frosties, sweet dressings.

Best order: Dave's Double bunless with cheese and mustard; or a full-size salad with grilled chicken and oil-based dressing.

Taco Bell

Harder than the others but manageable. The tortillas carry most of the carbs.

Works: Power Menu Bowl without rice and beans (ask for "Fresco style" or customize); any protein with cheese, sour cream, and guacamole, no tortilla or rice.

Best order: Power Menu Bowl — steak or chicken, hold the rice and beans, keep the cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and pico.

Skip: all tortillas, the Nacho Fries, Cinnabon Delights.

In-N-Out

Works: "Protein Style" — any burger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun, standard option at every In-N-Out.

Best order: Double-Double Protein Style. Around 11g net carbs from the spread and tomato. Skip the fries.

Subway

Harder — the bread is the product.

Works: salad bowl (any sandwich built as a salad, no bread).

Skip: all breads, sweet sauces (teriyaki, honey mustard, sweet onion). Oil and vinegar, mustard, and mayo are low carb.

Best order: any protein as a salad bowl — turkey or tuna with oil and vinegar, cheese, and vegetables.

Logging a fast food order

Fast food meals don't have a barcode, but they're describable. Tell Copper Keto Companion "double patty bunless cheeseburger with mustard and lettuce" and it estimates the net carbs immediately. The eating out guide covers restaurant logging generally.

Frequently asked

Is fast food bad for keto even if it's low carb? The carb count is what governs ketosis, not food quality. A bunless burger fits the ceiling. Whether the oil quality, sodium level, and overall food quality are good for health is a separate question from whether it breaks ketosis.

Can you eat at fast food chains every day on keto? Keto-wise, yes — the carbs fit. Nutritionally, the same concerns apply as with frequent fast food eating generally: high sodium, processed meat, limited vegetables. Occasional fast food is fine; daily is a different judgment.

What fast food sauces are keto? Mustard, mayo, hot sauce, ranch (check the label — most are low carb), guacamole. Skip ketchup (around 4g per packet), BBQ sauce, honey mustard, teriyaki, and any "sweet" sauce.
